What We've Learned About Workforce Leadership

Workforce Leadership Cards

We (Vinz Koller, Alison Gash, Chandra Larsen, and I) had a great time sharing what we've learned to date through our Workforce Leadership Project with attendees at the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) Annual Forum, Feburary 6, 2011.

We convened a conversation about our 12 project "highlights", which include:

1. It's really more like "We-adership."

2. Workforce development comes in at least 31 flavors.

3. "In order to form a more perfect..." alignment?

4. Impact > Program +System

5. It's a global village.

6. Workforce Development = Pick-up Basketball?

7. Effective workforce leaders can play many positions.

8. Workforce leadership demands lifelong learning about learning and work.

9. The list of "need-to-knows" for workforce leaders is growing.

10. Leaders Wanted! (for the next generation)

11. Workforce Development is serious business.

12. Leadership development demands a response, but what?

We made flashcards (see image) as handouts and they went so quickly we thought we should provide an alternative means of accessing them. So here is the link to the PDF from which you can make your own. And here is the link to the PowerPoint we used to guide discussion.

We'd be happy to talk to you about this content, the project, and of course, workforce leadership. And importantly, photos of all the fun we had (and learning we did) are here. They are under a Creative Commons license, so feel free to use them and let us know.
